Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Patients are often curious why they need to come in every six months, especially if they take good care of their teeth at home. There are actually a few reasons you shouldn’t skip your biannual checkups and cleanings! First, these routine appointments ensure that tooth decay, gum disease, and the like are detected (and treated) in the early stages. Second, conditions like oral cancer can fly under the radar without periodic screenings. Third, your toothbrush and floss can’t remove plaque and tartar like the tools we have at our office.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Your dental checkup will be with one of our compassionate and talented dentists. After getting to know you (or catching up with you, if you’re a long-time patient), they will examine your X-rays, take a look at your teeth, gums, and any existing dental work, and conduct an oral cancer screening. If they notice anything concerning – like a small cavity or large crack – they will bring it to your attention right away and let you know what the next best steps are to protect your oral and overall health from further harm. Of course, if everything looks okay, then this step will be over, and the cleaning will begin!

Your dental cleaning is different, but equally as important. At this time, one of our gentle, knowledgeable, and caring dental hygienists will take a look at your gums, clear away stubborn plaque, and address built-up tartar. After this process is complete, they will gently floss your teeth and apply a polish to remove any light surface stains. Throughout the process, they will let you know if they see anything concerning or if they have recommendations on how to improve your at-home oral hygiene regimen.
