Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

It’s important to recognize that dental insurance is designed to be used on a regular basis, not only when a dental issue arises. This makes dental insurance quite different than medical insurance, which is often utilized to handle serious injuries or illnesses that appear suddenly. By getting routine checkups and cleanings performed regularly, you actually reduce the chances that you’ll have to pay more for dental care as well as get the most out of your benefits.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

You should always look over your plan’s details directly as it is likely unique from other dental plans from other providers. However, the coverage model your plan follows is likely to look something like this:

  • Preventive Dental Services – checkups, cleanings, X-rays are usually considered preventive and receive near or 100% coverage
  • Minor Restorative Services – dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy are considered minor restorative care and receive between 70% and 80% coverage
  • Major Restorative Services – crowns, bridges, and dentures are often labeled as major restorative services and receive up to 50% coverage

We Offer In-Network Savings & Welcome Out-of-Network Providers

While Framingham Dental Group is currently in-network with BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts and Delta Dental Premier, we are happy to welcome out-of-network plans from other providers as well. By being in-network, you can generally expect to pay less on average for your dental services. Of course, we do our best to keep fees fair and reasonable, making it possible to cover the cost of treatments using an out-of-network plan. Please give our team a call so we can look over your coverage and break down how much you can expect your dentistry to cost.
